Lesson Introduction/Anticipatory Activity
Once students complete vocabulary for this lesson, students will be given a KWL chart handout. Students will be prompted to complete the first two sections of the chart. Students will address what they know about the Roman Empire and what they want to know. This chart will help address any misunderstandings that students may have from prior lesson's and will help assess what students know. The KWL chart will peak their interests in Rome's expansion through war and diplomacy once students complete the last section of the KWL chart. The "what have you learned" section will help students check for any misunderstandings of what they knew. The KWL chart will help students process the content in manner that will help them acquire the knowledge to understand the concept of empire.

Content Delivery
This lesson will be delivered by a short presentation and textbook reading. Students will examine the growth of Rome. Students will understand what factors contributed to the expansion of Rome's Empire. By using sliderocket as a presentation tool, students will be able to follow with the teacher as to what tasks need to be done. Additionally, students will have an opportunity to visualize the expansion of Rome's Empire through visuals, i.e., maps of rome's expansion. Two maps will be presented to students. Students will have time to see Rome's early expansion and then compare it to a map of Rome's expansion at its largest. Students will complete a note taking handout during this short presentation and during the in-class reading. The reading will give students the bulk of the information. Reading will help students understand how Rome was successful in the expansion of its Empire. Additionally, through the reading and the handout, students will finally be able to comprehend the concept of Empire by answering a question that asks students to "describe the factors that were essential to Rome's growth."
Student Engagement
Students will be required to complete a KWL chart at the beginning of class and at the end of class. Students will list what they know, what they want to know and what they have learned. (KWL chart handout can be found under the Lesson Introduction)
Moreover, in this lesson students will be required to follow the teacher through a presentation and textbook reading. Students will be asked intermittently to complete a section of a handout. The handout will help students draw upon their prior-knowledge of past empires they have studied. Students will be asked to list ideas that come to mind, in regards to how empire expand their territory. Students will use this prior knowledge to draw assumptions on what Rome may do to expand. After reading, students will finally be able to pin point the factors that contributed to Rome's expansion. The student activity handout serves as a note taking guide that will help students organize the content they have learned and help them understand the concept of Empire. In the end students will be asked a question that will help them tie all the information they have gathered into a cohesive written paragraph.

Demonstrated Learning (Informal and Formal Assessments)
At the beginning of the lesson when students complete the first two sections of the KWL chart, teacher will be able to informally assess students knowledge of Rome's growth. While weaving in and out of rows to review the information that students write within these two sections, teacher will be able to clarify any misunderstandings that students may have and perhaps review prior knowledge that will help students comprehend the content and meet the lesson objectives.
For formal assessment, students will be required to write a paragraph about the two important factors that were essential to Rome's growth. This will help assess student overall content acquisition and help assess if their are any misunderstanding that need to be address before proceeding to the subsequent lesson. A quick one paragraph write up will help students think critically and help build content meaning. The write up will help assess if lesson goal and objective were met.

Lesson Closure
At the end of the students quick write, students will be asked to complete the last part of the KWL chart. Here students will write what they have learned about Rome's expansion. Once students complete the activity, teacher will review important ideas and the concept of empire with the students. Through class participation, students will address and elaborate their understanding of what they learned and why it was important in the history of Rome.
