Lesson Introduction (Anticipatory Set)
Class discussion on myths or legends throughout history. Students will discuss their knowledge of myths or legends about their history. Teacher will then ask students, “What do myths and legends tell us about a civilization?” Teacher will then ask students to predict what ancient Roman myths could be about. The anticipatory set will grab students attention by accessing their prior knowledge of what they understand about myths and legends. This will allow the teacher to examine if there needs to be an explanation of what a "myth" or "legend" is.
Vocabulary (Content Language Development)
Students will be given a handout with key vocabulary terms. The handout will ask for the definition of the term and will ask students to paraphrase in their own words what the definition means to them. This will allow students to understand the meaning of the word. Students will be able to better retain the vocabulary and expand their academic language. Students will be able to pair up with a partner. Teacher will monitor and address that students will not be allowed to copy their partners work.

Content Delivery
The content will be delivered by a lecture using PREZI. Students will be introduced to the location of Rome and its geographical features. Students will also be introduced to the reasons that led to Rome’s growth. Lecture will be 15 minutes and will require students to complete a Guided Notes handout.
Student Engagement
In this lesson students will need to complete a guided notes handout while the content is being presented. Guided notes will help students write down important ideas that were presented. The guided notes will help serve as an informal assessment of student comprehension of content. In the last part of the guided notes, students are asked to compare and contrast Rome's geography with that of Greece's. This helps students recall what they know about Greece's geography and write down what they know about Rome's geography. This will also help assess if there are any content learning gaps that may need to be reviewed with the students again.

Demonstrated Learning (Formal Assessment)
Students will do a quick write. Students will answer the last question from the presentation. Students will submit their quick write at the end of the class. The quick write will help assess student understanding of the content that was presented and will help determine if certain content needs to be re-taught based on student responses.
Lesson Closure
Once students submit their quick writes, I will open the class up for discussion. The class discussion will address the content that was learned and what students will be introduced too in the subsequent lesson. The class discussion will serve as a rapid form of assessment of student comprehension of the content instead of waiting to grade the students quick writes.
